Chip and pin has been around for a long time and it is common to find high street vendors, retailers, restaurants and bars using old mobile chip and pin machines where each base unit acts a receiver connected to its own telephone line. Many of the payment system services now accept card transaction processing over the internet and ADSL broadband internet access charges have fallen, so it is worth considering the cost benefit of replacing all those telephone line rentals with one internet connection cost.
If all the chip and pin machines are in fixed positions then it makes sense to connect them to the internet via standard CAT5 cabling and a firewall. But if the chip and pin machines need to be mobile so that card payments can be taken all over the premises, then a large wireless network which covers the whole are is probably the answer.
There are many manufacturers of wireless payment systems of which Verifone and Thyron are to name but two. Their wireless chip and pin machines usually connect to internet payment systems via a wireless network, firewall and ADSL broadband. Firewalls do need to be configured and tested to make sure that transaction processing traffic is being processed by them correctly.
So consider the cost of the telephone line rental and calls of say 6 old chip and pin machines and then weigh this up against the cost of one telephone line and an ADSL broadband subscription charge. Using wireless payment systems in this way also improves payment processing speed as the transaction occurs at Internet speeds not using slower analogue modem technology.
