So the first stage of a wireless network setup has been completed. The overall requirement has been considered and a manufacturer and products have been selected. For example the initial analysis of a project may conclude that a 3Com WX2200 wireless controller with 12 AP2750, 8 AP3150 and 6 AP3750 access points will provide sufficient coverage. But a wireless survey needs to be conducted to confirm the number of wireless access points and just as importantly where they will be positioned.
Surveying an environment is a process that takes time because although the direction of transmission of wireless aerials is generally relatively straight forward the environment itself can have a great effect on the way the signal moves around the space. So it is essential to try access points in different positions and test to see how the signal strength varies in the space.
It is a good idea to take into consideration sources of radio interference when surveying. If they are available, technical drawings with electrical installation information can provide an insight into possible access point locations to test. Essentially, avoid positioning access points near anything that might be the source of signaling problems or radio frequency interference.
The result of the wireless survey is to finalise the quantity and types of access points required, ascertain their exact ideal locations and the orientation of installation for each access point to provide the right level of coverage. This information therefore defines where CAT5 network cabling points need to be installed to connect the access points to the central controller.
So the initial requirements for the wireless network setup have been analysed and a wireless survey undertaken. The next step is installation which I will be covering in part 3 of this series of postings soon.
