Network monitoring service and legacy systems

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

The downturn in the world’s economy has left us with a climate of unease. Every day we see and hear of the effects: companies making staff redundant, homes being repossessed, companies filing for bankruptcy. And in the world of information technology this means reduced IT budgets, possibly reducing staff, postponing the replacement of core network hardware and the need to get more out of legacy computers, servers and networking equipment.

So what is needed to try to safely get greater longevity out of legacy network equipment? The answer is a network monitoring service and a solid support contract for the hardware. There is a clear dependency and resources problem here. Running legacy systems for longer requires more monitoring to keep them up and running, but if staffing levels are reduced there will be less time for monitoring tasks. Using an outsourced network monitoring service solves these problems.

A network monitoring service can quickly identify problems and if they are software related many can be resolved quickly across the Internet. However, should the problem turn out to be hardware related an engineer with the right parts will be needed on site as soon as possible. Having the right hardware support contract in place to deal with such moments will allow IT managers to have piece of mind. Before agreeing a support contract though, it is important to analyze the impact that the failure of each critical network component can have. This will help to identify the service level that is needed for each piece of hardware.

A key aspect of network monitoring is preventative maintenance - proactively searching for potential problems before they cause downtime. For example, setting a threshold to send an alert when a volume only has 15% capacity left is a great help. But a preventative maintenance schedule can go further by reducing log files, deleting temp files and recording volume usage over time. This data can be used to predict when a volume will be full so that work to address the need for more capacity can be scheduled in plenty of time.
