We have been installing Blackberry software products for a number of years, including Blackberry Desktop software, Blackberry Professional software and of course Blackberry Enterprise Server. The ever increasing demand for smart phones, brought about by models such as the Blackberry Storm and Blackberry Curve, and reductions in data charges has greatly increased smaller businesses level of interest in Blackberry Professional software for Microsoft SBS (Small Business Server) environments.
One of the advantages of Blackberry professional is that it does not necessarily require a separate server. If Microsoft SBS server with Exchange is running on a decent hardware specification and therefore has plenty of available resources, Blackberry Professional can happily coexist on the same server. The software is not particularly resource hungry and when installed correctly (we have seen several that are not) it works reliably in the background and does not seem to cause any conflicts or operating system problems.
Blackberry Professional provides an enhanced level of integration and functionality over its little brother, Blackberry Desktop Manager. Users are able to send, sync and amend appointments on the go across the mobile network without the need to sync with a desktop via USB. Emails are ‘push’ based and therefore arrive on the Blackberry as soon as they hit the email server. Appointment amendments can be made using Outlook or a Blackberry device and changes are synchronized in both directions.
There are several other useful features of the software, including policy based control of devices (Blackberry Storm, Blackberry Bold, etc.) call logging and the ability to update software and firmware on the phones remotely. No need to return devices back to the office for updates and changes which can be costly and take time.
