Racks, Cabinets & Enclosures

i-Zimbra have a large amount of experience with rack equipment, from both our cabling and server installation work.

Computing equipment racks or cabinets are used to house sensitive IT equipment.

Originally, racks and cabinets were the preserve of data centres. More recently, smaller businesses with complex networks have seen the sense of using equipment racks to provide an increased level of security, a reduction in the number of people with access to computing equipment, reduced floor-space and of course a professional look.

Rack Mounting Your Network Equipment

Most communication and server equipment is either designed specifically for rack mounting or to be converted for rack use. However, this is not a given. For any company that intends to house their equipment in a rack, it is essential to check that their existing or proposed equipment is compatible.

For computer systems that are provided by the same manufacturer, it is often the case that the equipment will fit with great ease into that manufacturers preferred cabinets. However, where there are a diverse number of equipment suppliers, it is important to ensure you are buying the best cabinet or rack to house your equipment.

There are typically 2 types of rack, although they are rarely described as such. Lightweight cabinets are typically used for cabling and IT connectivity equipment. They are often furnished with cable management and trays to ease fitting of equipment, patch panels and associated wiring.

Server racks are typically able to withstand greater weights and loads, offer less cable management and are often built to have greater depth, to allow servers and their associated wiring to fit within. Server cabinets are typically built with air-flow in mind and usually equipped with mesh doors at either end.

Finding the Best Location for Rack Cabinets

Whichever cabinet suits your needs, a site survey is important. If you cannot actually get a cabinet on to the site (server cabinets are typically pre-welded and do not come apart) you have a problem. It is also necessary to understand the load on the cabinet and indeed the area in which it is located (have you ever seen a cabinet that has partially broken through a floor?).

For these reasons, choosing the right equipment is as important as choosing the right location. i-Zimbra can provide site surveys and installation for small to large systems, covering a single rack to server room design. We can also provide advice on the installation of diverse equipment into the right housing with the correct air-flow and cooling capacity. We are also able to supply rack-mounted fire supression systems.
