Fibre optic cables can carry much more information than ordinary copper wire cabling, and are less vulnerable to signal loss and interference.
This means fibre optic cable enables more powerful and reliable communications while requiring less physical cabling, and makes it more effective than ordinary copper telephone lines, particularly over long distances.
Fibre optic technology utilises very thin glass or transparent fibres to carry lightwaves. These lightwaves can be converted to and from other signals, such as voice or data transmissions.
For Broadband connection, fibre optic cabling provides high-speed data transmission and is much less likely to lose connectivity than a dial-up connection. The fact that a single fibre optic cable can carry a significantly larger amount of information than a copper wire line means that less space is required for cabling - this is particularly useful when you are trying to connect a large number of users from one office. It also means that fibre optic cabling is quick and easy to install, and in many cases it is also cheaper to install than copper wire.
Because fibre optic cable does not contain any metal, it does not conduct electricity, eliminating the risk of electro-magnetic interference to the line and the damage that can be caused by a sudden power surge, for example by a lightning strike.
