Glossary of IT Terms

There are a lot of technical terms used in the IT and web development industries which the layman may not be entirely familiar with.

While we always strive to use plain English when talking to clients, there are inevitably occasions whereby we have to use computer terminology. So, to help you make sense of some of the jargon used in the computer world, we have compiled this handy glossary of techie terms and web speak. We hope it helps to make things a bit clearer!

Glossary of Computing Terminology

WAN

Wide Area Network. A computer network spread over a large geographic area such as a country or even the entire world. The Internet is a WAN.

WAP

Wireless Application Protocol. The set of standards for the presentation and delivery of information to a wireless device such as a mobile phone or BlackBerry®.

Web / World Wide Web

The largest and most widely-used network on the Internet.

Web 2.0

A term which has come to describe any aspect of web technology or design that utilises the unique features of the Internet to enhance creativity, collaboration, and interaction among web users.

Web Accessibility

The practice of making a web site easy for anyone to view and interact with, particularly those with disabilities.

Web Address

See URL.

Web Browser

A piece of software used to view web pages on the Internet. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are examples of web browsers.

Web Page

A section of a web site which can be scrolled down on one screen, without having to navigate to another part of the site. Each web age has a unique URL, or web address. This glossary is one page of the i-Zimbra web site.

Web Usability

The practice of making sure visitors to a web site can find what they are looking for quickly and easily.

Web Site / Website

A collection of web pages under one domain. A web site can be made up of just one page, or thousands.

Web Traffic

The visitors to a web site.

Web Traffic Analysis

The examination of the numbers and behaviour patterns of visitors to a particular web site.

Windows

A computer operating system developed by Microsoft. It has existed in a series of different versions since 1985, and is used by the majority of non-Apple PCs throughout the world.

Wireless

Any network or device which uses a remote signal, such as radio waves, to transmit data, eliminating the need for cables.

WordPress

A free, open source blog publishing application written in PHP, which utilises a MySQL database.

Worm

A type of virus that is able to spread itself over a computer network.

WWW

World Wide Web. See above.
