There are a lot of technical terms used in the IT and web development industries which the layman may not be entirely familiar with.
While we always strive to use plain English when talking to clients, there are inevitably occasions whereby we have to use computer terminology. So, to help you make sense of some of the jargon used in the computer world, we have compiled this handy glossary of techie terms and web speak. We hope it helps to make things a bit clearer!
In IT terms, a program or part of a program which allows the user to make modifications to a file, for example a web page design program.
A virus hidden within the code of a seemingly harmless program, which can be used to illegally retrieve or corrupt data on a computer.
A computer operating system originally developed in 1969 and designed to be used by many people at the same time.
To copy or transfer data from your computer or data storage device to another source such as the Internet.
Uniform Resource Locator. The web address of a page, for example http://www.i-zimbra.com/glossary_t-v.htm is the URL for this page. Each individual web page has its own unique URL.
Universal Serial Bus. A standardised system for connecting many different types of device to a computer.
A small portable data storage device which can be connected to a computer via a USB port. Sometimes referred to as 'memory sticks' or 'memory cards'.
The interface that allows a USB device to be physically connected to a computer.
A piece of code that has been designed to corrupt or destroy data on a computer. Often viruses are hidden in other programs or documents and cause damage to the computer when the program or document is opened. If the computer is connected to a network, the virus may spread to other computers on the network, unless they are protected by a firewall.
Voice over Internet Protocol. A system used to transmit voice signals (most commonly via telephone) over the Internet or another network.
Virtual Private Network. A secure network connection where the data is encrypted and can therefore be kept private.
