Glossary of IT Terms

There are a lot of technical terms used in the IT and web development industries which the layman may not be entirely familiar with.

While we always strive to use plain English when talking to clients, there are inevitably occasions whereby we have to use computer terminology. So, to help you make sense of some of the jargon used in the computer world, we have compiled this handy glossary of techie terms and web speak. We hope it helps to make things a bit clearer!

Glossary of Computing Terminology

Keyword

A word or phrase which is entered into a search engine to find websites related to a specific subject, or a word or phrase which is featured in the content or meta data of a web page to encourage search engines to display that page in results pages for that term.

Landing Page

The page of a website which an Internet user is taken to when they click on a pay-per-click advert. A good example of a landing page will tell the visitor everything they need to know about the website without the need for them to navigate elsewhere. The term is also less commonly used to describe the first page a visitor sees when they enter a website, regardless of how they got there.

Laptop

A small portable computer powered by a rechargeable battery.

Memory

In computing terms, 'memory' can refer to any piece of hardware which is used to store and retrieve data, but is most commonly used to describe the RAM built-in to the computer itself.

Meta data / Meta tags

Text which is included in the source code of a web page, but not displayed on the page itself (with the exception of the <title> tag), and gives search engines useful information about the page in order to improve the way it is listed in search engine results pages.

Microsoft

The world's largest software development company, responsible for products such as Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, and many more.

Modem

Short for modulator/demodulator. A piece of hardware which allows data to be transmitted between computers, usually over a telephone line.

Mouse

A device which is used to access and operate functions on a computer by controlling a cursor on the computer screen or monitor. When the mouse is moved over a flat surface, the cursor moves correspondingly. On-screen elements can be 'clicked' on by pressing a button on the mouse in order to activate a process.

A popular social networking website on which users can build a network of 'friends' to share information and files with. It is particularly popular with musicians and other performers or organisations, as it can be used to quickly distribute video and audio files and other data to large groups of people.
