There are a lot of technical terms used in the IT and web development industries which the layman may not be entirely familiar with.
While we always strive to use plain English when talking to clients, there are inevitably occasions whereby we have to use computer terminology. So, to help you make sense of some of the jargon used in the computer world, we have compiled this handy glossary of techie terms and web speak. We hope it helps to make things a bit clearer!
Graphical Interface Format. A file format for storing images. As they are support far less colours than, for example, JPEG files (256 colours with GIF as opposed to over 16 million different colours with JPEG), GIFs are better suited for computer-generated graphics, as opposed to photographic images.
One of the most widely-used search engines on the web. Google also run a number of other online applications, such as AdWords and Google Analytics.
A pay-per-click system run by Google.
An online web traffic analysis program run by Google.
A term used to describe someone who gains unauthorised entry to a computer or network, often with the intention of obtaining, removing, or modifying data.
Also known as a hard drive or hard disk drive (HDD). A data storage disk which is housed permanently within a drive inside a computer. Hard disks store much larger amounts of information than other data storage devices.
Used to refer to any physical equipment used in computing, for example printers, servers, keyboards, and the computer itself.
Hard disk drive. See hard disk.
The provision of storage capacity for a web site, or number of web sites on a server, usually for a fee, which allows them to be accessed on the Internet.
HyperText Markup Language. The programming language most commonly used to build web sites. Web browsers translate this code into the web pages you see on the screen.
HyperText Transfer Protocol. The set of rules followed by a browser in order to access the World Wide Web.
A word, image, or other element on a web page that takes a user to another page, or another part of the same page, when clicked on with a mouse. Often shortened to 'link'.
A world-wide network of servers that allows the sharing of information between any computers that are able to access it.
A private network that allows the sharing of information between computers within that network. It is usually confined to members of a specific business, organisation, or institution.
Internet Protocol. The standard by which data is transmitted across the Internet.
A code consisting of four sequences of digits that identifies a computer on a network. Each computer has a unique IP address.
Integrated Services Digital Network. A circuit-switched telephone network system which allows digital transmission of voice and data over an ordinary copper wire telephone line. It is slower than a Broadband connection.
Internet Service Provider. A company that provides Internet access, and commonly the technical support to go with this.
Information Technology. The term encompasses all modern systems used to store and handle data, including computers, networks, hardware and software.
A programming code most commonly used to create Internet applications. It is not the same as JavaScript.
A programming language most commonly used to create dynamic elements of web pages. It is not the same as Java.
A free open source content management system for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets.
Joint Photographic Experts Group. A file format for storing images. JPEGs are best suited for reproducing high-quality photographic images.
A company that designs and sells Internet Protocol network products and services.
